You probably know someone.

The colleague who speaks perfect English on the phone, then hands you the written message. The uncle who knows every film and every song, but not the sign above the shop. Hundreds of millions of adults live in spoken English without being able to read it — not because they can’t learn, but because nobody taught them the code.

Vula teaches that code, one real word at a time. Your part takes a minute: put it on their phone.

What it does

Point the camera at real English.

A sign, a box, a bill — the words they actually need, where they actually are.

The word opens.

Vula splits it into syllables and speaks every piece, then the whole word. Guidance is spoken in their own language — nothing depends on reading the screen.

They judge for themselves.

They record it, listen back beside Vula’s voice, and decide. No scores, no grades — the learner is the judge.

Underneath is structured phonics — the six syllable types, marked the same way every time, and honest labels for the words that follow no rule — built for adults who already own the spoken language. Vula teaches reading, and only reading; it makes no promise about writing.

What it never does

  • No account, no ads, no price. Free because it should exist.
  • Nothing from the camera or the microphone ever leaves the phone.
  • No scores. Nothing counts anyone’s days, and a quiet week changes nothing.
  • One gesture deletes everything Vula knows.
  • Built to be left: when a short check shows unaided reading, Vula says so, hands over the record, and opens the door.

Each of these links opens the app with its guidance already spoken in that language:

FOR HELPERS — HOW VULA TEACHES

Structured and sound-first. Syllable by syllable, sound by sound — each syllable type keeps one colour and one drawn mark inside the app. Irregular parts are labelled as learned by heart, never dressed up as rules.

A five-minute start, run by you. The app walks any literate adult — beside them, or on the phone with them — through a short placement check. Nobody fails it; it only picks the starting rung.

The learner stays the judge. They record themselves, compare, and call the win. Vula never grades and never mentions absence.

Private, and finished. Everything lives on their phone, and one gesture deletes it all. Graduation is a real event — the app says it, means it, and initiates nothing after.
