The short version
- You do not need an account.
- We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your progress stays on your phone.
- Pictures from the camera never leave your phone.
- Your recordings never leave your phone.
Vula is made by Immanence Inc.
What stays on your phone
Vula keeps your progress on your phone. That is the lessons you finished, the words you read, your check results, your language and voice settings, and the days you opened Vula. We do not have a copy.
To delete it all, open your shelf of words. Press and hold the kite at the bottom for two seconds. Then tap “Delete all”. Clearing your browser data deletes it too.
The camera
When you point the camera at a word, your phone reads it. The picture stays on your phone.
The first time you use the camera, your phone downloads the reading tool from a free download service called jsDelivr. No picture is sent.
Your voice
When you record yourself, the recording stays in the page. It is never saved and never sent. It is gone when you close Vula.
Vula uses your phone’s own voice to say words out loud. On some phones, that voice uses the internet.
On iPhone
The iPhone app reads words with the phone’s own reading tool. Nothing is downloaded and no picture is sent.
When you record yourself, the recording is a file on your phone. It is deleted when you say you read the word, and when you delete everything.
To delete everything, open your list of words, press and hold the kite at the bottom for two seconds, then tap “Delete all”. Deleting the app deletes it too.
New words
Sometimes the camera finds a word Vula does not know yet. Then Vula sends that one word to our server, as text. Only the word. Never the picture, never the words around it, and never where you are.
If our word list does not have the word, our server asks an AI service, Anthropic’s Claude, how to say it. Only the word is sent. A copy of that question and answer may be kept in a checking tool called Braintrust, so we can check the answers are right. It is not linked to you.
What we count
Our server counts a few things. Each count is one event, not a person. It has no name, no account and no phone number. It keeps the day, not the time.
We count when:
- a lesson is finished, and which lesson;
- a reading check is finished, but not the answers;
- someone graduates;
- someone opens Vula on a new day, as the number of days since they first opened it;
- the camera finds a word Vula did not know, and which word;
- someone turns on help in their own language, and which language.
These counts tell us if Vula helps, and when people stop using it.
No cookies, no ads
Vula uses no cookies and shows no ads. We do not sell data. There is no data about you to sell.
Vula runs on Vercel. Like every website, Vercel sees the internet address of your phone. Vula holds it in memory for a short time, to stop misuse. Vula never writes it down.
Vula checks if you are on a phone or a computer, to choose the first page. It does not keep this.
On the page for helpers, vula.help/site, and only there, we count visits with Vercel Web Analytics. It uses no cookies.
